12V vs 24V - Which Should You Choose?

Choose 12V if:

  • Your vehicle has a standard 12V electrical system (most 4WDs and utes)
  • You have a single or dual 12V battery setup
  • You want easier installation with standard automotive wiring

Choose 24V if:

  • Your vehicle has a 24V system (some trucks, military vehicles, heavy equipment)
  • You want lower current draw (half the amps of 12V for same power)
  • You're running long power cable distances (less voltage drop)
  • You have dual 12V batteries that can be wired in series

Note: Both configurations deliver identical pulling power and line speed. The 24V version draws half the current, which can be beneficial for electrical system efficiency.

Steel Cable vs Synthetic Rope - Which Line Type?

12mm Steel Cable (30,000 lb MBS):

  • ✓ Traditional choice - proven durability
  • ✓ Abrasion resistant on rocks and rough terrain
  • ✓ Lower cost option
  • ✓ Requires roller fairlead (included)
  • ✗ Heavier weight
  • ✗ Can kink and develop sharp burrs
  • ✗ Dangerous if it breaks under load

12mm Dyneema Synthetic Rope (31,000 lb MBS):

  • ✓ Lighter weight - easier to handle
  • ✓ Safer if it breaks - drops to ground instead of whipping
  • ✓ Won't kink or develop sharp edges
  • ✓ Floats in water
  • ✓ UV resistant Dyneema construction
  • ✓ Uses hawse fairlead (included)
  • ✗ Higher initial cost
  • ✗ Requires more care around sharp edges
  • ✗ Should be inspected regularly for wear

Our Recommendation: For serious off-road recovery, synthetic rope is the safer, more user-friendly choice. For commercial/industrial use with frequent abrasion, steel cable may be more economical.

Installation Requirements

Before You Buy - Ensure You Have:

  • ✓ Heavy-duty winch-rated bull bar or winch cradle (rated for 25,000+ lbs)
  • 12V System: Minimum 800 CCA battery (dual battery system strongly recommended)
  • 24V System: Two 12V batteries (400+ CCA each) wired in series, or dedicated 24V battery
  • ✓ 2 AWG or larger power cables (4-6m length recommended)
  • ✓ 200-250 amp circuit breaker or fuse
  • ✓ Heavy-duty mounting bolts (M12 or larger)
  • ✓ Professional installation recommended for safety

⚠️ CRITICAL: This winch draws up to 700 amps (12V) or 350 amps (24V) at full load. Undersized cables or poor connections will cause voltage drop, overheating, and potential fire hazard. Professional installation is strongly recommended.

Sherpa Stallion vs Competition

Why Choose Sherpa Over Other Brands?

  • Sherpa Stallion 25K: Best value, 5-year warranty, exceeds rated capacity, Australian support
  • WARN M15000: Premium brand, higher price, 15,000 lb capacity (not enough for heavy vehicles)
  • Runva 20K: Lower cost, shorter warranty, less proven track record
  • T-Max 25K: Similar specs, but Sherpa has better Australian dealer network and support

Maintenance & Care

To ensure long life and reliable performance:

  • Inspect cable/rope before each use for wear or damage
  • Grease planetary gears every 12 months or 50 pulls
  • Clean and lubricate clutch mechanism annually
  • Check all electrical connections for corrosion
  • Exercise winch monthly (spool in/out under no load)
  • Keep winch covered when not in use to protect from elements
  • Re-spool cable/rope under light tension after each use

Australian Conditions Tested

The Sherpa Stallion has proven itself in Australia's harshest environments:

  • ✓ Cape York mud and river crossings
  • ✓ Simpson Desert sand recoveries
  • ✓ High Country rock crawling
  • ✓ Coastal beach driving and saltwater exposure
  • ✓ Commercial mining and forestry operations
  • ✓ Emergency service and recovery operations

Safety Guidelines

⚠️ IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION:

  • Never exceed the winch's rated capacity
  • Always use a winch damper/blanket on the cable during recovery
  • Keep all bystanders at least 1.5x the cable length away during operation
  • Never hook the cable back onto itself - use a tree protector and shackle
  • Wear heavy-duty gloves when handling cable/rope
  • Ensure vehicle is in Park/Neutral with parking brake engaged
  • Use snatch blocks to double line pull when needed (reduces load on winch)
  • Never use winch to lift or move people

5-Year Comprehensive Warranty

Sherpa 4x4 backs the Stallion with a 5-year comprehensive warranty covering mechanical and electrical components. This is one of the best warranties in the industry, giving you peace of mind for years of heavy-duty use.
